Staffs are linked to the ancient Celtic belief of the power of trees. In order to understand how the ancients thought they worked, you first have to understand the significance of trees in their lives.
As an ancient symbol, the tree represents things that grow and all things in this ancient world had spirit. With its roots in the earth and its branches reaching to the sky a tree represented a bridge between heaven and earth - it was a mediator between both worlds.
A staff was used for many purposes including healing and protection.
Please bring a staff with you from a fallen tree (try to identify the type of tree first) as well as anything from nature you are drawn to like feathers to decorate it with.
We will spend a little time exploring what the ancients believed was the distinct properties of each type of tree before moving on to create your own staff.
